Dressed in matching pink hospital robes and blue caps, 10 Mayan women chat about defying Guatemala’s religious and cultural norms.

The women, who are between 27 and 38, have gathered at the Family Well- Being Association (APROFAM), the nation’s largest nongovernmental family planning agency, to undergo tubal ligations. Each has paid $9.40 to be sterilized.
